Healthcare Plaza, the street leading from Walnut Street to the Center Building, Gilmore Center for Health Education and two parking ramps on Bronson Methodist Hospital’s North Campus, will temporarily close March 6, 2006 as part of the hospital’s $50 million campus expansion project. The development is in response to greater than 30 percent growth in inpatient services over the last five years resulting in the need to increase hospital capacity. The transformation of the Center Building into a new patient care pavilion has been underway since late last year and work will now begin on the building’s exterior and streetscape improvements.
Healthcare Plaza is expected to remain closed to pedestrians and vehicles until spring, 2007, when the new North Pavilion is completed and its top floors will be occupied by the Bronson BirthPlace and Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The North Pavilion will have medical offices on the first floor for obstetricians, nurse midwives, perinatologists, neonatologists and related healthcare providers. Support services, such as laboratory and diagnostics, will also be incorporated along with a café and other amenities. The building already includes two floors operating as patient care units. Select Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute care hospital, leases space on the second floor, and Bronson’s Adult Medical Unit (AMU) occupies most of the third floor. Bronson envisions that the Children’s Hospital and associated pediatric providers will move into the North Pavilion at a future date, allowing the building to then function as a dedicated infant’s and children’s hospital.
For the coming year, visitors to Bronson’s North Campus can best access services by following these directions:
Access to the Gilmore Center
Effective March 6, no traffic will be allowed on Healthcare Plaza north of the Gilmore Center, so all vehicles will need to enter and exit the Jasper Street Ramp from the Jasper street side. The Jasper Street Ramp is still the designated parking location for visitors attending programs and events in the Gilmore Center.
Access to the Center Building & Lovell Building
Visitors to Select Specialty Hospital and the Adult Medical Unit in the Center Building and people going to Human Resources and business offices in the Lovell Building are asked to park in the new John Street Parking Lot at the corner of Lovell and John streets. The parking lot can be accessed from both streets. To enter the buildings, people should use the public entrance located at the west end of the Lovell Building facing the John Street Parking Lot. It will be staffed by a greeter or security personnel and will have a courtesy phone and information kiosk for wayfinding assistance.
To get from the South Campus to North Campus
The underground pedestrian tunnel that runs beneath Walnut Street connecting Bronson’s South and North campuses will be unaffected by construction and is available for staff and public use.
Bronson appreciates the community’s support of its campus development project, as well as everyone’s patience as this expansion is completed. By 2008 when the South Campus space currently occupied by the Bronson BirthPlace and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is converted to private rooms, Bronson will have 49 more patient rooms available for adult patients than it has today.
