Annual Run & Walk to Benefit Young Patients and Families
On Sunday, September 24, runners and walkers from communities throughout the region will fill the streets through downtown Kalamazoo in support of children’s health. The annual Bronson Children’s Hospital Run & Walk is designed for everyone – competitive runners as well as families looking to take an easier pace.
Because Bronson Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in southwest Michigan, many people know family members, friends, neighbors or coworkers whose children have been ill or injured and spent time at Bronson. Many of the services available to these young patients and families are supported through proceeds from the Run & Walk.
Sara Crill’s son, Oliver, spent four weeks at Bronson Children’s Hospital when he was just a month old. Oliver had a respiratory infection and pneumonia. “I drew my strength, daily, from the incredible doctors, nurses and support staff,” says Sara. “They were always available to lend a hand or answer questions, and I know they had Oliver’s best interest at heart.” Sara and her family have organized a team for the Run & Walk and will take part in the event for the first time this year.
Some of the services and programs the event supports include child life specialists, art and music therapy, and a child-friendly hospital environment. One of the highlighted projects this year is the renovation of the 17-year old playroom in the pediatric unit. The upgrade will include an infant corner and teen corner, as well as a sensory wall.
“Being a child in the hospital or having a child in the hospital is tough,” says Terry Morrow, Vice President of Development and Community Health at Bronson. “We are so grateful that the community joins together during the Run & Walk each year to let families know, they aren’t in this alone. Every person that runs or walks or makes a donation is helping to send the message that our region supports children’s health.” Gifts to the Children’s Hospital Fund are managed by the Bronson Health Foundation.
