Bronson Expanding Availability of Bone Density Studies in Vicksburg

June 20, 2008

VICKSBURG, Mich. – Bronson Vicksburg Hospital is expanding the hours of service for bone density screenings on its campus at 13326 N. Boulevard in Vicksburg. Bone density tests are now available in Radiology Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

“We’re pleased to be able to expand access to this important service,” said Laura Howard, director of Bronson Vicksburg Hospital. “We have seen an increase in the number of patients seeking bone density studies in Vicksburg, so expanding the number of hours and days each week will help meet the community’s need.”

Individuals interested in scheduling a bone density test appointment at Bronson Vicksburg Hospital should call (269) 341-8700. A physician referral is required.

Bone mineral density (BMD) tests are the single most reliable tool for assessing bone strength and risk for osteoporosis, the most common type of progressive bone disease in the United States.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone mineral density (BMD) tests as the best way to screen for osteoporosis (bone loss). If the BMD indicate osteoporosis, medical treatments can help slow further bone loss.

Bronson Vicksburg Hospital has the most accurate and reliable equipment for detecting bone loss: DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) Bone Density technology. DEXA is a very precise test with low radiation exposure. It measures the areas at highest risk for fracture, such as the hip and spine. DEXA tests require patients to lie on their back, and the painless test takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Bone density tests are also available in downtown Kalamazoo at the Bronson Center for Women located in the Medical Office Pavilion at Bronson Methodist Hospital and at Bronson Advanced Radiology Services, 524 S. Park Street. In Paw Paw, bone density tests are available at Bronson LakeView Hospital, 408 Hazen Street.
