Bronson Healthcare Recognizes Outpatient Nurses with DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is a recognition program that celebrates nurses for their exceptional clinical skills, compassion and dedication to patients and their families. Nominations come from those who experience their care firsthand—patients, families and colleagues.

At Bronson, DAISY Awards are presented regularly throughout the year. This award cycle marks a special milestone: the first time we are solely recognizing nurses who work in the outpatient (ambulatory) care setting, which will continue on a bi-annual basis.

Allison Austin, BSN, RN: Bronson Pediatric Cardiology Specialists

Bronson nurse Ally Austin smiles for the camera in the Bronson Methodist Hospital hallway, smiling and holding her DAISY Award.Ally was nominated for the DAISY Award by the mother of a patient who describes Ally as “the best of the best.” She goes on to explain that her two-year-old son has spent more than half his life in the hospital. Of all the caregivers he sees, “there are only a few he shows off his charming smile and bright blue eyes for and one is Ally! He adores her, asks for her all the time and reaches out for her whenever he sees her… My son would not be where he is today if it were not for Ally. I would not be as confident in my abilities to take care of him if it were not for Ally. She goes above and beyond to do every single thing she can to make my life easier so I can focus on my son and what he needs.”

Sharing a story about one patient in particular, the nomination explains, “over the past year, I have heard Susan sit on the phone for several hours with [a patient] who suffers from severe health anxiety among a few other chronic health conditions. Susan is incredibly patient and calm with her … [always answering her questions and discussing her providers’ expectations]. She explains things multiple times and tries to simplify them as much as possible. She is always coordinating with our Transition of Care team and providers to make sure this patient is seen. Susan truly has empathy for how nervous her patient is about her health and attempts to help her problem solve every step of the way.”

About the DAISY Award

The DAISY Award is supported by the not-for-profit DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation. Bonnie and J. Mark Barnes created this foundation and award as a way to remember their son, J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick had a disease that attacked his body and was in the hospital for a long time. His nurses did such a great job with him that the Barnes family created an award that continues to recognize the excellent work nurses do every day.
