Bronson Healthcare Now Offering Advanced Robotic Lung Biopsy Technology
Ion’s precision helps detect lung cancer earlier and offers a less invasive option for patients

Kalamazoo, Mich., May 19, 2026 — Bronson Healthcare is bringing high-precision lung cancer detection closer to home with Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy. This technology provides greater precision and a less invasive option for patients in southwest Michigan.
The pulmonology team at Bronson Methodist Hospital began using this imaging technology in April as a next step after an abnormal lung scan, especially when nodules are small or located in hard-to-reach areas.
“Lung cancer is often diagnosed at later stages,” said Zachary Bauer, DO, a fellowship-trained pulmonologist specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Bronson Methodist Hospital. “This technology helps us detect lung cancer and other abnormalities much sooner, which allows for more options for effective treatment.”
Ion combines detailed CT imaging with robotic precision, allowing physicians to guide a thin, flexible scope through a patient’s natural airways to collect tissue samples. Because the procedure does not require a needle through the chest wall, it is less invasive than traditional biopsy approaches and may reduce certain risks.
Bauer noted that technology is only part of a broader commitment, emphasizing the importance of screening, early detection and steps patients can take to protect their health.
“Screening can help detect lung cancer at an earlier stage, often before symptoms appear,” Bauer said.
Risk factors for lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., include smoking history, secondhand smoke exposure, older age and certain environmental or occupational exposures.
According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, annual lung cancer screening with a low-dose CT scan is recommended for adults:
- Ages 50 to 80
- With a 20 pack-year smoking history (e.g., one pack per day for 20 years or equivalent)
- Who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years
Patients with questions about lung cancer screening or follow-up care after an abnormal scan should talk with their healthcare provider or call Bronson Pulmonary Medicine Specialists at (269) 388-5864.
