Bronson Methodist Hospital Achieves “Exemplar” Status in Care for Older Adults

Bronson Methodist Hospital has achieved “Exemplar” status for its Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) program. NICHE is the premier national designation indicating a hospital’s commitment to excellence in the care of patients 65-years-and-older. The “Exemplar” status recognizes Bronson’s ongoing, high-level dedication to quality care of older adults.

“I’m very proud that our nursing team has been recognized again for its care and attention to the unique needs of older adults,” says Denise Neely, MBA, BSN, RN, chief nursing officer at Bronson Methodist Hospital. “Bronson was one of the first organizations to participate in the NICHE program and to implement evidence-based care approaches for care of older adults. We are now mentoring others.”

The “Exemplar” status – the highest of four possible program levels – was assigned following a rigorous self-evaluation of the current state and future goals of Bronson Methodist Hospital’s NICHE program.

The requirements include implementation of:

  • Geriatric resource nurse (GRN) model
  • Evidence-based protocols
  • Aging-sensitive policies that include input from patients, families and the community
  • Leadership roles on a regional and national level

The annual program self-evaluation is used by hospitals to determine the level of their NICHE programs. The evaluation benchmarks program progresses year-to-year, targets future care initiatives and provides data to use in gaining and sustaining support from institution stakeholders. Bronson Methodist Hospital has been involved in NICHE for more than a decade and provides guidance to other hospitals across the nation on becoming NICHE sites. To learn more about NICHE, visit
