Bronson Methodist Hospital Honored with Quality Achievement Award for Stroke Care

Bronson Methodist Hospital has received the Get With The Guidelines®;-Stroke Silver-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) for the treatment of stroke patients.

Get With The Guidelines Stroke helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Bronson Methodist Hospital earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.

In addition, Bronson Methodist Hospital has earned AHA/ASA Target: Stroke honor roll designation for having 50 percent or more ischemic stroke patients getting the clot-busting drug rT-PA within 60 minutes of arriving at the hospital. Research shows stroke patients who are assessed, diagnosed and get clot-busting drugs within an hour of arrival have significantly better outcomes and reduced long-term disability.

“Bronson Methodist Hospital is dedicated to continuously improving the quality of stroke care and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s guidelines help us achieve that goal,” said Dean Kindler, MD, executive director of neurosciences. “This honor measures our commitment to ensure that stroke patients receive care based on internationally-respected clinical guidelines.”

Bronson Methodist Hospital has received several other accolades for the quality of its neuroscience program. It has been ranked as one of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care™ for three years in a row (2012-2014), is Primary Stroke Center accredited by The Joint Commission and is ranked among the top 5 percent in the nation for neurosciences (2012-2014) and neurosurgery (2013-2014) by Healthgrades.

“We are pleased to recognize Bronson Methodist Hospital for their commitment and dedication to stroke care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines steering committee and executive director of interventional cardiovascular programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. “Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures can reduce patients’ length of stays and 30-day readmission rates and reduce disparity gaps in care.”

According to AHA/ASA, stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
