Bronson Methodist Hospital Nurses Receive DAISY Awards

Three nurses from Bronson Methodist Hospital are recent recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Bethany Campbell, BSN, RN; Kristen DeGroff, MSN, RN; and Charmaine Kwei, MSN, RN, each received a DAISY Award for providing outstanding patient care during the third quarter of 2014.

Nurses are nominated for the DAISY awards by patients, family members and colleagues. Here is more about the nominations:

Campbell, a nurse from the Labor and Delivery Unit, received the DAISY Award for her expertise and caring beyond expectation. When all efforts were exhausted to save a newborn, Campbell was able to demonstrate exceptional care. “Words cannot express our appreciation for the care, comfort, dignity and support given to Gabriel during his brief life,” the family member of the patient wrote. The nomination went on to say “it is clear that you believe in your mission and practice it 24/7.”

DeGroff, a nurse from the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, was nominated by the sister of a patient being treated for a traumatic brain injury. “The road to recovery looked long and doubtful, this is when we met Kristen. She was so caring, knowledgeable, compassionate and a true advocate for my brother when he couldn’t be for himself,” the patient’s sister wrote. DeGroff was able to support and comfort the family members to guide them through the very scary and stressful time. “We requested Kristen every day that she worked and built a great relationship with her.”

Kwei, a nurse from the Orthopedic Surgical Unit, received the DAISY Award for her ability to care for patients with an extra measure of patience. Kwe was nominated by a fellow Bronson employee, who credits her communication skills for helping to calm a particularly difficult patient. “She made such a connection,” wrote Kwei’s coworker, “it made it so much easier not only for the patient, but also the staff. She shows grace and poise in her nursing and it shows through and through.”

If you have been a Bronson patient and would like to nominate a nurse who cared for you, go to and fill out the DAISY Award form.

The DAISY Award is supported by the not-for-profit DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation. Bonnie and J. Mark Barnes created this foundation and award as a way to remember their son, J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick had a disease that attacked his body and was in the hospital for a long time. His nurses did such a great job with him that the Barnes family created an award that continues to recognize the excellent work nurses do every day.
