Bronson Methodist Hospital Recognized for Outstanding Patient Experience

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Bronson Methodist Hospital recently received the 2014 Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™; for outstanding performance in the delivery of positive experiences for patients during their hospital stay. The achievement places Bronson among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationally and sets it apart as the only hospital in southwest Michigan to receive the award six years in a row.

The award is based on Healthgrades’ new report, “Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Report,” which explores the importance of patient experience in the overall quality of care and identifies Bronson Methodist Hospital as one of just 447 hospitals to consistently meet the high standards.

“This is the sixth year in a row that Bronson Methodist Hospital has been recognized for the caliber of the patient experience we provide,” says Cheryl Knapp, MBA, RN, CPHQ, CPPS, Bronson Healthcare vice president of quality. “This clearly reflects one of our core values: patient- and family-centered care. Our staff takes great pride in creating compassionate experiences for patients throughout the Bronson Healthcare system. It is a tremendous honor for us to be recognized among the best hospitals in the nation based on what our patients say about their care experience.”

To be eligible for the Healthgrades 2014 Outstanding Patient Experience Award, Healthgrades evaluated 3,582 hospitals that submitted patient surveys to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), covering admissions from March 2012 – April 2013. Bronson Methodist Hospital’s performance was assessed by its patients across 27 different questions that roll up to 10 distinct measures. Ranging from cleanliness and noise levels in a patient room to factors such as pain management and responsiveness to patient’s needs, the measures also include whether a patient would recommend Bronson Methodist Hospital to friends or family.

“As consumers are becoming more active participants in their health care, measured performance surrounding the patient experience at a hospital is an increasingly important consideration for patients in choosing where to receive their care,” said Evan Marks, Healthgrades executive vice president for informatics and strategy. “Consumers can rest assured that those hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades 2014 Patient Experience Award demonstrate a commitment to exceptional focus on the needs of the patient during their stay at the hospital.”

Bronson is also recognized in the "Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation." According to Healthgrades, Bronson Methodist Hospital is among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for orthopedic surgery, spine surgery and stroke care in 2014.
