Bronson Named a 2010 Working Mother 100 Best Company

September 14, 2010

Today, Working Mother magazine released its 2010 list of the nation's 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers. The announcement marks the seventh year that Bronson Healthcare Group has been recognized among those whose family-friendly benefits - from flexible schedules and childcare to innovative leave policies for new parents - are helping redefine workplace standards across the country.

"Being named to Working Mother's 100 Best Companies list is an exceptional honor, and it has a very positive impact on southwest Michigan as Bronson's growing national reputation attracts staff and physicians from around the country," said Frank J. Sardone, Bronson president and CEO. "It also validates that Bronson has created an environment where people want to work and where they feel they have the support they need to do their best. That translates into consistently higher quality care and service for Bronson patients and families."

Bronson Healthcare Group is currently Kalamazoo's largest employer. The non-profit healthcare system has nearly 5,000 employees and eighty percent of its workforce is female. The Working Mother 100 Best list includes all industries and organizations of all sizes as it recognizes employers in the United States whose family-friendly programs adeptly help employees in all areas of their lives.

Companies selected for the 2010 Working Mother 100 Best Companies responded to more than 600 questions on workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more. They were also surveyed on the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them.

Seven areas were measured and scored: workforce profile, benefits, women's issues and advancement, child care, flexible work, parental leave and company culture. For this year's 100 Best, particular weight was given to benefits, flexibility and parental leave.

John Hayden, Bronson's chief human resources officer, said, "We recognize that family-friendly programs not only improve our employees' lives, but are also a smart investment as they create a high level of employee satisfaction and engagement. Bronson has one of the lowest turnover rates in the healthcare industry. This significantly reduces our hiring expenses and allows us to put more resources into programs, education and services for all of our employees and medical staff."

Working Mother reports that while the 100 Best Companies continue expanding their benefits, those offered at companies nationwide lag. Just 44 percent of American companies offer telecommuting (vs. 100 percent of the 100 Best), 17 percent offer formal mentoring (vs. 95 percent), and 37 percent offer health insurance for part-timers (vs. 100 percent). In contrast, all of the 100 Best Companies offer paid maternity leave, lactation rooms, flextime, mental health consultations and elder-care resources; and 98 percent offer health screening and wellness programs-particularly significant in a stress-inducing, poor economy.

In Michigan, Bronson is one of only three companies to be named to the 2010 list. Others include Dow Corning and Kellogg. The complete list of the Working Mother 100 Best Companies as well as national comparisons can be found at workingmother.com/bestcompanies.
