Kathleen (Kathy) Smiarowski, RN, from Bronson South Haven Hospital, and Rae Stevens, RN, from Bronson LakeView Hospital, were both recognized this month with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Below, read their nominations to learn how they go above and beyond to ensure patients receive exceptional care at Bronson.
- Kathy Smiarowski, RN, is a nurse on the General Care Unit at Bronson South Haven Hospital. "Recently, we had a patient who was comfort care and COVID-19 positive. Because of COVID precautions, the patient was alone in their room often. One day, I noticed Kathy in this patient’s room. She was sitting with the patient and singing to them. In a scary situation, Kathy was compassionate and thoughtful to the patient’s needs." Read Kathy's full nomination
- Rae Stevens, RN, is a surgery nurse at Bronson LakeView Hospital. "Rae is one of the most kind and compassionate nurses I have had the privilege to work with. We recently had a very elderly patient who required a lot of patience and care. Rae took her time with this patient. She explained things slowly and clearly. She was extremely gentle with her and took the time that was needed to give the best care and attention." Read Rae's full nomination.

About the DAISY Award
The DAISY Award is supported by the not-for-profit DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation. Bonnie and J. Mark Barnes created this foundation and award as a way to remember their son, J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick had a disease that attacked his body and was in the hospital for a long time. His nurses did such a great job with him that the Barnes family created an award that continues to recognize the excellent work nurses do every day.
