Do You Know if Your Heart is Healthy?
February is National Heart Month. Bronson Healthcare is offering a variety of events and services to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and how to prevent it.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., yet the condition has a difficult time shaking its reputation as one primarily afflicting older men. Every 80 seconds a woman becomes a victim of heart disease, which claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined.
Women often experience different symptoms than men when experiencing a heart attack, such as unexplained anxiety, dizziness, weakness, tiredness, palpitations, cold sweat, paleness, stomachache or abdominal pain.
Both women and men should call 911 immediately if they or someone else experiences mild discomfort or nagging ache in the center of the chest, discomfort in the neck, jaw, arm and/or back of shortness of breath and nausea.
Free Online Heart Disease Risk Assessments
People who complete an online heart disease health risk assessment this month will be entered to win a Hohm Multifunctional Electric Pressure Cooker. Visit or web page here to take the heart disease risk assessment and receive a personal report showing their heart disease risk levels. The assessment is free, confidential and takes about ten minutes.
Heart Health Screenings
The twenty- minute test evaluates Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TC/HDL Ratio; Triglycerides; Blood Sugar; Blood Pressure; Pulse for rhythm and rate; Height; Weight; Body Mass Index; Waist; Hip and Hip Ratio. Screening also includes assessment for Metabolic Syndrome. Each screening includes an explanation of results, goal setting, encouragement and supporting information.
Heart Health Screens cost $35 and take place at Bronson Methodist Hospital South Campus in suite M-460. Parking is available in the Vine Street Ramp. Visit bronsonhealth.com or call 341-7143 to schedule an appointment.
Heart Scans (Coronary Calcium Scoring)
This painless CT scan detects calcium buildup in the arteries. Catching signs of heart disease early gives people time to seek treatment before feeling the symptoms or experiencing a heart attack.
The Heart Scan costs $200 and is not currently covered by insurance. It includes all technical, medical and professional interpretation and a personalized report. Visit bronsonhealth.com or call (269) 341-7723 for scheduling and information. The Bronson Heart Scan is offered at Bronson Outpatient Testing, located on Bronson Methodist Hospital's South Campus first floor, next to the main entrance. Parking is available in the Vine Street Ramp.
