Celebrating Bronson Methodist Hospital's Newest DAISY Award Winners

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is an international recognition program that celebrates nurses for their exceptional clinical skills, compassion and dedication to patients and their families. Nominations come from those who experience their care firsthand — patients, families and colleagues.

At Bronson, we recognize DAISY Award winners throughout the year. Read the stories below to learn about our most recent winners from Bronson Methodist Hospital and join us in celebrating their exceptional work. This group of honorees were selected from nominations received during the fourth quarter (October-December) 2025.

Douglas Bell, RN: Bronson Infusion Center

Against a grey backdrop, Nurse Doug, wearing green scrubs, smiles for the camera.Doug received multiple nominations for the DAISY Award, each describing not only excellent skills, but exceptional compassion. One nomination explains, “He treats my elderly mom with such dignity and patience. Knowing that she’s in his hands gives my dad one less thing to worry about and brings our whole family a deep peace of mind that’s hard to describe.” A second patient shares, “Doug not only provided excellent clinical care — he provided hope at a time when I desperately needed it. He made me feel seen and reminded me that there are still good people in the world who care.” Another shares, “Doug started my IV all while making me laugh and feel comfortable. His kindness and proficiency made me feel very secure in an intimidating situation.” Read Doug’s nominations now.

Melissa Kuneli, BSN, RN: Mother/Baby Unit

Against a grey backdrop, Nurse Melissa, wearing a grey Bronson t-shirt with a stethescope around her neck, smiles for the camera. Her kindness, compassion and willingness to go above and beyond for her patients earned Melissa several nominations for the DAISY Award. “Our Baby needed some extra care. When it was time to set up the first round of antibiotics, Melissa did it in our room. I later learned that this was not typical and that usually the infant is taken to another location to receive antibiotics. Doing so in the room was actually more work for her. When asked why she did it in the room, she explained it was because ‘she knew I needed to be with my baby and she was happy to do it.’ This was just one of MANY ways Melissa selflessly went above and beyond to provide care to our family.” Read Melissa’s nominations now.

McKenzie McDaniel, BSN, RN: Emergency Department

Against a grey backdrop, Nurse Mckenzie, wearing a black Bronson t-shirt and a Bronson employee badge, smiles for the camera.McKenzie was nominated for the DAISY Award by a grateful parent following an unexpected trip to the Emergency Department. “McKenzie immediately connected with my son. She was friendly, silly and playful in a way that tapped into his personality and helped him feel comfortable during what could have been a very scary visit for him. Her kindness, attention to detail and ability to meet a child right where they are emotionally made such a difference in our experience. She turned an anxious situation into a calm and reassuring one.” Read McKenzie’s nomination now.

Mary Miller, BSN, RN: Extended Medical Care Unit

Against a grey backdrop, Nurse Mary, wearing a white Bronson t-shirt under a green scrub jacket with a stethescope around her neck, smiles for the camera.Mary’s DAISY nomination highlights her compassion and creativity in a moment of distress. One night, her patient became disoriented and insisted he needed to touch iron, believing it would relieve his pain and cure his cancer after a vivid dream. Though confused at first, Mary took the time to listen and truly understand what would comfort him. With nothing nearby made of iron, she went to her car, removed the trailer hitch and placed it in his hand. The patient quickly calmed and rested. Later, he shared, “I saw her praying on her knees. I held the iron. I could sleep.” Read Mary’s full nomination now.

About the DAISY Award

The DAISY Award is supported by the not-for-profit DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation. Bonnie and J. Mark Barnes created this foundation and award as a way to remember their son, J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick had a disease that attacked his body and was in the hospital for a long time. His nurses did such a great job with him that the Barnes family created an award that continues to recognize the excellent work nurses do every day.
