Providers and employees sign the last beam that will used to complete the framework for the new Bronson South Haven Hospital.

The steel framework for the new Bronson South Haven Hospital will soon be complete. “The weather has been on our side,” stated Kirk Richardson, sr. vice president/COO/CNO at Bronson South Haven, as he shared that activities are on pace to complete construction of the new hospital by the end of this year.

This week, Bronson employees and medical staff in South Haven commemorated their pride and service to the community by adding their signatures to a permanent piece of Bronson South Haven history ─ the final steel beam for the new hospital. Next week, the beam covered with an array of well wishes and names will be raised into place atop the structure, signaling the completion of the framework for the new hospital.

This tradition, called ‘Topping Out’, is a custom among iron workers around the world and is a signal that a structure has reached its full height. As part of this tradition, an American flag and an evergreen tree will be placed above the finished framework. Over the course of the construction, over 40 building trades companies and 1,000+ individual tradespeople will be involved in building the new hospital.

Sheral Bradley, a surgical assistant at Bronson South Haven, came to sign the beam and shared a memory of finding messages inside a wall during a remodel at a facility she was previously stationed at. “It was great fun to find those messages that had been hidden away for years,” she shared. “We were excited to have an opportunity to include our own messages before the wall was sealed once again. I’m glad we had the opportunity to sign the final beam for this new building knowing that one day our messages may be found and read by the grandchildren or great grandchildren of our current patients.”

Richardson added, “Our employees and medical staff are very dedicated to serving this community and are actively engaged in building the programs and services that our new hospital will provide. Signing the beam is a great way for them to mark their involvement and share their enthusiasm for what we are building together.”

The new 52,000 square foot, $22 million dollar facility is scheduled to be completed in December and open to the public in early 2021.
