February is National Heart Month. Bronson is offering a variety of events and services to raise awareness about heart disease and how to prevent it.
Eating healthful meals is important at every age, but especially for seniors. A healthful diet cannot only help keep your body strong, it also goes a long way in lowering your risk for heart disease. This free program will be held on Wednesday, February 5, starting at 11:30 a.m. at Burnham Brook Center. Two members of the Bronson Battle Creek food service department along with two hospital dietitians will offer cooking demonstrations and healthful tips for seniors. Register online or call (800) 451-6310 to register.
Bronson Heart & Vascular provides free women’s heart health classes. Both men and women are encouraged to attend a special class that provides instruction about how to use an AED and perform hands-only CPR. The free class will be held on Wednesday, February 12 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Gilmore Center for Health Education on the Bronson Methodist Hospital campus. Register online or call (269) 341-6550 to register.
WomenHeart of Greater Kalamazoo will meet at Bronson Athletic Club on February 26, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. WomenHeart is a national coalition for women with heart disease. This free support group meets monthly to provide heart health education for women and their families. Visitors to Bronson’s website, www.learnyourrisk.com can receive a free personal report showing their heart disease risk levels. The assessment is free, confidential and takes about ten minutes. Take the heart disease risk assessment now.
The twenty- minute test evaluates total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TC/HDL ratio; triglycerides; blood sugar; blood pressure; pulse for rhythm and rate; height; weight; body mass index; waist; hip and hip ratio. Screening also includes assessment for metabolic syndrome. Each screening includes an explanation of results, goal setting, encouragement and supporting information.
Heart health screens cost $35 and take place at Bronson ProHealth, located at 820 John Street. Call (269) 341-6495 or e-mail email@example.com to schedule an appointment.
Heart scans are offered every Monday at Bronson Methodist Hospital. This painless CT scan detects calcium buildup in the arteries. Catching signs of heart disease early gives people time to seek treatment before feeling symptoms or experiencing a heart attack.
The heart scan costs $200 and is not currently covered by insurance. It includes all technical, medical and professional interpretation and a personalized report. Call (269) 34-HEART, or (269) 344-3278 for scheduling and information. The heart scan is offered at Bronson Outpatient Testing, located on Bronson Methodist Hospital's South Campus first floor, next to the main entrance. Parking is available in the Vine Street Ramp.
