Bronson Hospitals Among Nation’s ‘Most Wired’

For a ninth year, Bronson Battle Creek has been named among the nation’s Most Wired hospitals by Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN) magazine, the lead publication of the American Hospital Association(AHA). Being named to the Most Wired list is recognition of the healthcare organization’s investment in and use of information technology that supports patient safety, quality care and best healthcare practice.

This year, Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and Bronson LakeView Hospital in Paw Paw were also recognized among the nation’s Most Wired. Bronson Methodist was recognized in the ‘Most Improved’ category and Bronson LakeView in the ‘Small & Rural’ hospital category.

Annually, the AHA conducts the survey in cooperation with McKesson Corp., AT&T and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives. It measures the level of health information technology (IT) adoption in U.S. hospitals and health systems through a detailed survey process. The Most Wired survey evaluates IT in four areas: infrastructure, business/administrative management, clinical quality/safety, and clinical integration. The 2014 results were based on a survey taken by 680 participants, representing 1,900 hospitals nationwide, or about 30 percent of U.S. Hospitals.

“The Most Wired data show that shared health information allows clinicians and patients to have the information they need to promote health and make the most informed decisions about treatments,” says Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association. “Hospitals, their clinicians and their communities are doing tremendous work to enhance their IT systems in ways that support care and delivery improvement, and patient engagement goals.”

Among some of the survey’s key findings related to improving quality and patient safety:

  • Nurses and physicians share best practices for patient safety and use checklists at more than 90 percent of Most Wired organizations.
  • To help consumers make better decisions about their health care, standard measures of individual hospital quality performance are reported and publicly available.
  • Sixty-seven percent of Most Wired hospitals report sharing critical patient information electronically with specialists and other care givers.
  • Eighty-one percent of Most Wired hospitals match medications to the patient by ordering via bar code technology at the bedside.
  • Thirty-six percent of Most Wired hospitals collect and provide data from patient encounters to create a community health record.

In early 2005, Bronson Battle Creek was among the first hospitals in the nation to take a giant technological leap and implement a paperless, electronic health record. Next February, it will take another leap from its current platform to the Epic electronic health record system already in use at Bronson locations in Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties. This offers an added feature, Bronson MyChart, a patient portal that gives patients convenient access to their health records 24/7 through a secured web site. No matter where a Bronson patient may be, they can access their health records, including medication records and records from previous Bronson appointments and hospitalizations.
