New Advanced Imaging Technology at Bronson Benefits Patients

November 20, 2013

Bronson Advanced Radiology Services now has a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine with more space for the patient. The new MRI machine is a Siemens Skyra 3 Tesla (3T) Wide Bore, and is the only imaging system of this type available in Kalamazoo.

Although open MRI has been available in this area for some time, the open wide bore advanced technology provides higher quality imaging. The machine design is good for patients who are claustrophobic or who may be larger in size, as many exams can be performed with the patient's head outside of the bore. The larger bore opening allows patients more room during the exam and the shorter length of the machine can help reduce patients' anxiety.

MRI is a safe and painless exam that uses a magnetic field and radio waves, instead of radiation, to create a detailed picture of the inside of the body. The test works well for a variety of conditions, including problems of the brain, spinal cord, chest, lungs, stomach, joints, wrists, ankles and more. During the MRI exam, radio waves work with the body's atoms to send millions of calculations to a computer. These are turned into three-dimensional (3-D) pictures that help pinpoint problems in the body. Bronson's MRI machine has cutting-edge technology to provide high quality 3-D images.

The 3T wide bore machine replaces the mobile MRI unit previously utilized at Bronson Advanced Radiology Services. All MRI exams at Bronson Advanced Radiology Services use the new machine and technology. Call (269) 341-6789 for more information.
