New Guidance Around Cow's Milk as a Baby Formula Alternative

With the ongoing baby formula shortage, many families are looking for guidance on what to do to fill the gap.

“We know this is such a difficult situation for families who are trying to do whatever they can to make sure their babies have the proper nutrition they need to grow and thrive,” says Dr. Megan Sikkema, a hospitalist at Bronson Children’s Hospital and pediatrician at Bronson Rambling Road pediatrics.

Sikkema recommends parents review the answers to these frequently asked questions, provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“One of the questions we often receive is whether parents can give their babies cow’s milk as a substitute for formula,” notes Sikkema. “As the AAP advises this should be used only as a last resort, and only on a very limited basis for babies at least 6 months or older.”
