HealthGrades, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization, recently announced that Bronson Methodist Hospital is one of just 263 hospitals in the nation ranked in the nation’s top five percent for emergency medical care. This is the third year in a row Bronson has received the HealthGrades Emergency Medicine Excellence Award™. The hospital is the only recipient in southwest Michigan.
Bronson Methodist Hospital is a regional medical center serving patients from ten counties in southwest Michigan. As an accredited chest pain emergency center, certified stroke center, Level I trauma center and southwest Michigan’s only children’s hospital, the hospital is a major destination for emergencies affecting patients of all ages. At present, its emergency department is the largest in the region providing care to more than 95,000 patients annually.
Findings of HealthGrades 2012 Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals study are based on an analysis of more than seven million Medicare records of patients admitted through the emergency rooms of nearly 5,000 hospitals from 2008 to 2010.
The study illustrates that there are clear differences in outcomes between the best‐performing hospitals and all other hospitals with regard to emergency admissions. These differences include:
• For the group of patients studied, Emergency Medicine Excellence Hospitals had, on average, 41.52% lower risk‐adjusted mortality than all other hospitals across the 12 diagnoses studied.
• If all hospitals performed at the level of the Emergency Medicine Excellence Hospitals from 2008 through 2010, an additional 170,856 people could have potentially survived their emergency hospitalization. A full copy of the study can be found at www.healthgrades.com.
Bronson president and CEO Frank Sardone says, “Receiving this honor is a credit not only to all of the emergency medicine physicians, nurses and staff, but also to all of our inpatient units, hospitalists and intensivists who continually have our patients’ best interests at heart. I’m proud of all our staff for working together to provide exceptionally high quality care, while seeing patients efficiently and safely – especially during times of continued growth.”
As with all HealthGrades studies of hospital quality, the data comes from governmental sources and no hospital can opt in or out of being rated. The analysis is based on risk-adjusted mortality outcomes for patients admitted through the emergency department for twelve of the most common life-threatening diagnoses in the Medicare population. They are: bowel obstruction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetic acidosis and coma, gastrointestinal bleed, heart attack, heart failure, pancreatitis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.
“It is imperative that anyone experiencing a medical emergency go directly to the closest hospital, especially in the event of a heart attack or stroke,” said Dr. Arshad Rahim, report author and Director of Accelerated Clinical Excellence at HealthGrades. “That said, our study findings show the care you receive once admitted to the hospital can also make the difference between life and death. We encourage all patients to educate themselves about the quality of emergency medical providers in their area and to choose a top performing hospital whenever there is a choice.”
Bronson Methodist Hospital has a long history as a top performing hospital. It is the recipient of the 2005 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation's highest presidential honor for quality and organizational performance excellence. In 2009, the hospital received the AHA McKesson Quest for Quality Prize awarded annually to only one U.S. hospital and joined the top five percent of hospitals in the nation to be designated a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence. For the past four years, Bronson has been ranked in the top five percent of hospitals in the nation as a HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ and is one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals for 2011 according to Thomson Reuters.
