KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Better testing and improved interaction between patients and staff at Bronson Methodist Hospital's Anticoagulation Clinic are the goals of a partnership between Pfizer Inc. and the Bronson Health Foundation.
Pfizer has awarded a $15,000 grant to the Bronson Health Foundation in support of the clinic. The Pfizer grant has been matched with a $5,000 Bronson Health Foundation grant and applied to implementing a new software system to improve the clinic's linkage with patients and enable staff to follow up more quickly with patients needing changes to their medication dosage. The new software also improves the ability for some patients to do self-testing at home on a weekly basis instead of coming to the clinic once per month.
Each month, the Anticoagulation Clinic serves more than 1,000 patients - predominantly seniors, many of them low-income - to help them monitor their use of oral anticoagulant medications such as Coumadin and Heparin. Anticoagulants are used to prevent abnormal formation and migration of blood clots. Of all pharmaceutical therapies, they are some of the most difficult-to-manage and most dangerous drugs prescribed for patients.
Angela Graham, executive director of the Bronson Health Foundation, says, "Thanks to Pfizer's thoughtful donation, Bronson patients on anticoagulation therapies will be able to lead more normal lives and gain greater control over their own care. This means improved quality of life for them and their families, as well as a reduced need for frequent follow-up visits to the doctor for medication concerns. The Bronson Health Foundation is very pleased to be a conduit for this important gift."
The Bronson Anticoagulation Clinic is located in Suite M-425 on the fourth floor of the Medical Office Pavilion at Bronson Methodist Hospital. For information, call (269) 341-7909.
