Pre-concussion testing now available at Bronson Battle Creek

August 01, 2013

Over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of concussions suffered by athletes.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been more than 3.8 million sports-related concussions each year. Of those, 700,000 occurred in children under the age of 19.

The types of contact and collision sports in schools make these accidents more likely to children and teenagers than in the past.  That is why the Bronson Battle Creek (BBC) Rehabilitation Services Department has invested in advanced training for its staff so it can offer local athletes the chance for pre-concussion testing.

Pre-concussion testing offers a snapshot of how the athlete’s brain functions in normal, everyday circumstances. Designed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for Sports Medicine, it evaluates neurocognitive functions, including memory, attention, brain-processing speed, reaction time, and post-concussion symptoms.

The tool that the Bronson Battle Creek certified athletic trainers use is a computer-based testing program designed for managing sports-related concussion information.

The test takes about 20 minutes to establish the baseline.  The cost is $15 for local athletes.  Because of the nature of the pre-concussion testing, appointments are required.

“The pre-concussion test can be an invaluable tool if an athlete suffers a concussion,” said Tom Lawrence, certified athletic trainer in the BBC Rehabilitation Services Department.  “It can offer important information to help physicians or athletic trainers respond more quickly in treatments by comparing the pre-concussion baseline scores with those they acquire during a suspected post-concussion.  In the end, those scores can help track recovery so the athletes can return to safe play at the appropriate time.”

Pre-concussion program at Bronson Battle Creek is the same one used by the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB.  Numerous NCAA Division I football programs use it as well.
