Study Ranks Quality at Bronson Methodist Hospital Among Top Five Percent in Nation For Fourth Consecutive Year

January 24, 2012

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Bronson Methodist Hospital, a regional medical center serving patients from ten counties in southwest Michigan, has been recognized by HealthGrades as a 2012 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence ™. This distinction places Bronson among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for overall clinical quality for a fourth consecutive year.

HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, released January 24, 2012, helps consumers evaluate and compare hospital quality.  The independent study objectively identifies those hospitals in the U.S. with the best overall clinical performance across 26 common medical diagnoses and procedures. It also ranks America’s top cities for quality hospital care based on which have the highest percentage of hospitals in the top five percent.   Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo is ranked #10 in the country based on having three out of eight area hospitals (Bronson, Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital and Holland Hospital) among the nation’s top performers.

“We are very proud to be delivering consistently high quality care to the thousands of patients and families who come to Bronson Methodist Hospital each year from communities throughout southwest Michigan,” said Bronson President and CEO, Frank Sardone.  “Public data releases such as this verify that our staff’s commitment to excellence is producing exceptional results.   As a growing regional health system, we are actively championing evidence-based approaches at all Bronson locations to ensure our patients experience quality care in every setting.”

HealthGrades analyzed Medicare patient data (approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for years 2008, 2009, 2010) from the nation’s 5,000 non-federal hospitals and assigned a 1-star, 3-star or 5-star performance rating.  Based on the analysis, Bronson was named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence and received overall awards of excellence for 2012 in Joint Replacement Surgery, Neurosciences, Neurosurgery, Stroke Care (including being named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care), Pulmonary Care, and Prostatectomy.

Also for 2012, the hospital received 5-star ratings for:  Treatment of Heart Attack; Treatment of Pneumonia; Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; Treatment of Respiratory Failure; Treatment of Stroke; Treatment of Gastrointestinal Bleed; Treatment of Sepsis; Back and Neck Surgery; Spinal Fusion; Total Knee Replacement Surgery and Total Hip Replacement Surgery.

Unlike other quality studies, HealthGrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes:  risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications.  This takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally. Hospital quality distinctions are independently created; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated.

Using the 263 top performing hospitals as a benchmark, HealthGrades quantifies the impact of differences in hospital quality in terms of lives lost and unexpected complications. The current study indicates patients who receive care at a top performing hospital like Bronson have a 30.07 percent lower risk of dying while hospitalized, and 1.86 percent lower risk of having in-hospital complications. If all hospitals in the U.S. performed to this standard, 165,704 Medicare lives could potentially have been saved and 6,800 Medicare in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided.

“Bronson Methodist Hospital can be proud of the contributions of its physicians, nurses and staff in achieving outstanding patient care,” said Kristen Reed, HealthGrades vice president of hospital ratings services and author of the study. “The Kalamazoo community is fortunate to have access to some of the highest quality hospital care in the nation.”
