Two Physicians Inducted Into Bronson Battle Creek Physician Hall of Fame
John Young, M.D. and the late Salvadore Yannitelli, M.D. were recently inducted into the Bronson Battle Creek (BBC) Physician Hall of Fame. The BBC Physician Hall of Fame was created in 2009 to recognize doctors who, through their long tenure and accomplishments, have mentored and served as an inspiration to others.
Doctor Young was born in Detroit and obtained his medical degree in 1956 from the University of Michigan. He completed an internship at Highland Alameda County Hospital, California and joined the service in 1957 becoming an Army Doctor and Navy Flight Surgeon. He came to Battle Creek in 1961 when he completed his service duties. Dr. Young served the Battle Creek community for more than 45 years as a board certified family practitioner. He was a member of the Academy of Family Practice, the American Medical Association as well as a former president of the Calhoun County Medical Society. He also served as an aviation examiner for the Federal Aviation Agency. He is a former chief of staff of Community Hospital and served several terms as chief of the family practice sector.
Dr. Yannitelli was born in New York and did his undergraduate studies at Cornell University. He earned his MD from The Long Island College of Medicine (now S.U.N.Y.) in 1943. He came to Battle Creek in 1950 to serve as director of the Kimball Sanitarium. He served in that role until 1954 when he entered solo private practice and retired in 1989. He served with the Tuberculosis Control Program of Calhoun County through the Health Department for more than 42 years. He was a member of the board of directors of Michigan State Medical Society, a life member of the American Academy of Family Practice and served as chief of staff of Community Hospital.
The BBC Physician Hall of Fame selection committee, under the leadership of Dr. Karamchandani, sought nominations from members of the BBC medical and nursing staffs to find both historic and contemporary physicians to be considered for induction.
