Wherever a patient seeks cancer treatment in the Bronson system, the Cancer Care Campaign is working to elevate that care. Our campaign priorities include:
Opened in 2021, this new facility welcomes local patients into a fully-equipped and healing environment. Bronson has invested $55 million to build the five-story Cancer Center - Kalamazoo, which is designed specifically for the needs of patients with cancer or blood disorders. The site offers medical oncology and infusion services to compassionately treat patients. Philanthropic support will help achieve our full, patient-centered vision for supportive services. Together, we will provide patient and financial navigation, yoga and massage therapy, appearance consultations, garden spaces and survivorship programming in this new facility. These services are not a nice-to-have. They are valued by patients and support their healing.
Every child diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder is special and deserves comprehensive care. Our Pediatric Hematology and Oncology program provides excellent treatment across nine counties in southwest Michigan. Encouragingly, medical innovation has improved the cancer survival rates among children, and Bronson is committed to supporting the long-term vibrancy of the children and families we serve. We are recruiting a Child and Family Psychologist and introducing neurocognitive testing to support childhood development. We must act now to ensure that children with cancer are equipped with the best care and support to protect their future.
For years, the cancer program in Battle Creek has been celebrated as a leading comprehensive site for care in the state. To support the excellence of this program and of the treatment patents receive, Bronson is investing in enhanced radiation technology and on-site renovations. Technology advancements include the purchase of a new Linear Accelerator and cutting-edge radiotherapy called HyperArc. With public support, Bronson Battle Creek is the first hospital in the state of Michigan to treat patients with HyperArc, which harnesses high-dose radiation to destroy cancer cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. Additionally, fulfilling a vision to upgrade sections of the facility will enhance the patient experience and further support healing.
A goal of our cancer program is to be welcoming to, and inclusive of, everyone in our community. Investments to better understand the root causes of disparities and barriers to care for patients based on race, gender, income, and other social demographics will improve our ability to advance equitable solutions for our patient care now, and in the future. Public support will build a research partnership that will propel this work, and will provide assistance for out-of-pocket needs that can devastate families when they receive a cancer diagnosis. Ensuring that patients have access to medication, transportation, food, and other needs is critical. With this work, all who come through our doors can be confident they are welcomed and supported.
