Bronson Methodist Hospital Recognizes Excellence in Nursing Award Winners During Nurses' Week

Nurses throughout the Bronson Healthcare system were recognized during Nurses’ Week from May 6 to 12, 2018. At Bronson Methodist Hospital, six nurses received awards based on key areas of the Nursing Professional Model of Care: leadership, compassion, respect, pride, expertise and impact. Honorees include:

  • Jessica Arnold, BSN, RN, CMSRN, a unit coordinator on the admission unit, received the Hazel Latondress Leadership Award. Through her multiple nominations, it is clear that Jessica is a true asset to her team, patients and Bronson as a whole. “In my 25 years as a nurse, I think Jessica is one of the most extraordinary nurses I have had the pleasure to work with. I do not say this lightly, as I have worked with some pretty phenomenal people. Jessica remains ‘real’ and there is no doubt she cares.”
  • Terri Poehlman, RN-BC, a nurse on the advanced medical care unit, received the Hazel Latondress Compassion Award. “She intentionally gets to know her patients and consistently goes above and beyond to meet their needs, both great and small. She makes each of her patients feel important and delicately maintains their dignity, helping them feel valued and respected.”
  • Katie Giffing, BA, RN, a nurse on the trauma care unit, was selected for the Hazel Latondress Respect Award. “Respect and dignity must be the foundations for our practice. Katie gets to know her patients and families. She takes time to learn about their beliefs, values and cultural preferences and then honors them. She takes pride in understanding the patient’s perspective. She keeps the environment calm and quiet and educates patients about the plan of care and makes sure they are part of the decision. She consistently communicates with respect and supports a healthy work environment.”
  • Kelsey Risdon, RN, a nurse on the trauma care unit, was the recipient of the Hazel Latondress Pride Award. “Kelsey demonstrates her dedication to nursing every day by the care that she gives. She practices nursing as if it is what she was born to do. She’s always smiling, compassionate and encouraging. She cares for people as if they were her family. ”
  • Lissa Garrod, MSN, RN, VA-BC, a nurse in the clinical informatics department, received the Hazel Latondress Expertise Award. “Lissa’s entire nursing career has been dedicated to becoming an expert in her role. She is a ‘go-getter’. She challenges herself every day, asking the ‘whys’, investigating functionality, and drawing on her nursing knowledge to make improvements.”
  • Jeffrey Denton, RN, a nurse on the trauma care unit, was the recipient of the Rising Star Award. Not only has Jeff excelled at transitioning into his role as a nurse, but has displayed an above-and-beyond commitment to providing an exceptional healthcare experience for every person, every time. “In the short 8 months that he has been a nurse, he has shown a positive attitude and professional demeanor. He has completed multiple certifications to expand his knowledge related to the trauma and burn population. He is proficient and dedicated to providing the best care to each and every patient.”

All of these winners represent the high caliber of nursing care at Bronson and further validate the hospital’s Magnet® recognition. Magnet® recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing and is considered the gold standard. It is the highest honor an organization can receive for professional nursing practice. To date, only seven percent of U.S. hospitals have earned Magnet recognition.
