Bronson Cancer Center's Expressive Arts Program

Being diagnosed with cancer is life-changing. Finding ways to cope with the physical, mental and emotional changes that come along with the cancer journey is important. Art - whether viewing or creating - is known to have healing effects. This is why Bronson Cancer Center offers patients free opportunities to create and engage in art of their own.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a relatively new form of mental health treatment. For people who have been diagnosed with cancer or other major health concerns, art therapy can:

  • Allow you to creatively express the emotions you are feeling, which may be difficult to put into words.
  • Provide a relaxing mental escape.
  • Reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and fear.

Art is personal. You do not have to be an artist or have any experience with art to benefit from art therapy. The only requirement is to be open-minded, and allow your mind to let go of how you are feeling in the moment.

Expressing Yourself Through Art

The Bronson Cancer Center offers an Expressive Arts Program. The program offers a variety hands-on art workshops and lectures that allow patients to explore the various areas of expressive arts. Some programs are held in-person, and others are available virtually.

The Expressive Arts Program is FREE for cancer patients. Activities are led by a combination of:

  • Local artists and art therapists
  • Local psychologists
  • Cancer center providers and social workers
  • And more

Upcoming Opportunities at Bronson Cancer Center

Bronson Cancer Center patients are invited to register for an upcoming expressive arts activity. Many of the upcoming options are led by either:

  • Gay Walker, a local expressive art therapist who is also a three-time cancer survivor
  • Morry Edwards, PhD, licensed psychologist and biofeedback practitioner at Neuropsychology Associates
  • Group fitness instructors from the Bronson Athletic Club

Registration is required, as space is limited in most classes. With questions, please contact Lisa Batsell, oncology social worker, at batselll@bronsonhg.org or (269) 286-7191.
