Stool Collection Instructions

Your provider may request a stool sample to help diagnose certain conditions or infections. If you are collecting a stool sample at home, use the instructions below to help you prepare and return your sample correctly.

How should I label the specimen?

Before collecting your sample, write your full name (first and last) and date of birth on the specimen container. This helps ensure the test is matched correctly to your medical record.

How do I know I have the correct container?

Your provider or the lab will give you the correct container for your test. You can also check the Stool Collection Guide (included with your kit or available at the lab) to confirm you are using the correct type of container.

Can C. difficile testing be performed on a solid stool sample?

No. C. difficile testing cannot be performed on a solid stool sample.

If you are unsure whether it is acceptable, contact the lab before returning the specimen.

When should I return my specimen?

Return your specimen based on the timeframe listed in the Stool Collection Guide. This ensures accurate testing results.

Who can I call if I have further questions?

(269) 341-6440 will route you to the lab for any other questions.
