Falls Prevention Tips

Some simple tips that can help lower your risk of being injured in a fall:

  • Exercise to increase strength, flexibility and improve balance.
  • Review medications with your provider and pharmacist. Some medications may increase the risk of falls.
  • Regular vision and hearing checks can help to identify issues that may affect balance and cause falls.
  • Be on the lookout for trip hazards in your home such as loose rugs, uneven flooring and clutter in walkways.
  • Make sure to have good lighting to guide your way, especially around stairs.
  • Install grab bars and handrails around your home for safety.
  • Use extreme caution when walking over uneven ground or when walking on wet or icy surfaces.
  • Remember that falls affect the entire family. No age is immune from the dangers of a serious fall.

Make it a priority to speak with your healthcare provider if you have issues with dizziness or balance, or have concerns about falls.
