Black Maternal Health
Supporting Mothers and Families in Our Community
Bronson is dedicated to providing exceptional care while improving access and equity for every patient. We continue to grow our OB/GYN care teams and equip them with the resources, training and support needed to address the unique needs of Black mothers and their families.
Through education, outreach and a focus on inclusive, supportive care, we are working to remove barriers and ensure that every mother receives the compassionate, high-quality care she deserves.
Addressing the Root Causes of Maternal Mental Health Disparities
Black mothers and birthing individuals experience maternal mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, at nearly twice the national average. About 40 percent are affected. These disparities are rooted in complex, systemic challenges, including mistrust of the healthcare system, fear of involvement with child protective services and barriers such as transportation, cost and access to care.
At Bronson, we are committed to advancing maternal health equity. By sharing trusted resources, expanding access to care and advocating for inclusive, patient-centered services, we support the mental and physical well-being of Black mothers, parents and their babies.
Why Black Women and Women of Color Face Higher Risk
A range of factors contribute to higher rates of maternal mental health conditions among Black mothers and birthing individuals, including:
- The impact of systemic racism on health outcomes
- Historical and ongoing distrust of the healthcare system
- Bias in screening, diagnosis and treatment
- Limited access to culturally responsive care
- Social and economic barriers that affect health and well-being
Recognizing these factors is an important step toward closing the gap and improving outcomes for families in our community.
