Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE)
Everyone deserves access to compassionate, respectful, medical care after experiencing sexual violence.
Our team of specially trained nurses are available 24 hours a day to provide confidential and compassionate support, medical-forensic services, and resources free of charge to people of all ages, genders, identities, and backgrounds who have experienced sexual violence throughout Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties.
When to call for medical care after sexual assault or abuse
Sexual assault or abuse happened within the past 120 hours (5 days).
- Survivor wants to have the exam.

What to expect
- A quiet, comfortable and private environment
- Our nurses are specially trained to take extra care and explain every step to you in a way that you can understand.
- Every part of the process is based on what you choose and what you are okay with.
- You will be in control of what happens to your body when you are with the SANE.
- You will be supported no matter what you decide to do.
- You will not be alone. An advocate will be there to offer resources and help you feel comfortable and safe.
- You can choose if you want to talk to the police. If you do, we will be here to help you.
What we offer
- Free medical-forensic care and consultation for concerns of sexual violence throughout Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties.
- Detailed documentation of medical history
- Detailed documentation of assault or abuse history
- Physical assessment
- Documentation of exam findings via written report, photography and/or videography
- Treatment of minor injuries
- Medicine to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STI)
- Medicine to prevent HIV
- Medicine to prevent pregnancy
- Swab collection. Patient chooses whether to release to police to be sent to the lab as potential evidence for DNA testing or if the swabs will be stored while they decide what is best for them.
- Urine and blood collection. Patient chooses whether to release to police to be sent to the lab as potential evidence for substance testing or if the samples will be stored while they decide what is best for them.
- Referrals for follow-up emotional support and additional resources
