Instead of radiation, ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images. It's a common, noninvasive test that helps your doctor diagnose and treat any medical conditions you may have.

Ultrasound Services and Treatments
- Abdominal ultrasound – Evaluates your kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and abdominal aorta
- Breast ultrasound – Screens for breast abnormalities such as cancer
- Cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) - Creates detailed images of the heart's structure and function to diagnose various heart conditions such as valve disease and cardiomyopathy
- General ultrasound– Examines the body's internal organs, while evaluating blood flow, narrowing of vessels and tumors
- Guided breast biopsy – Screens for suspicious solid masses or abnormal tissue changes in the breast
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound – Helps diagnose tendon tears, muscle abnormalities, soft tissue tumors and joint dislocations
- Obstetric ultrasound – Evaluates the health of a living embryo/fetus, the age of pregnancy and the potential prenatal abnormalities
- Pediatric abdominal ultrasound – For use on children to evaluate the appendix, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, intestines, kidneys, bladder, testicles, ovaries and uterus
- Pelvic ultrasound – Examines uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and bladder
- Prostate ultrasound – Screens for disorders, enlargement and abnormal growth of the prostate, as well as male infertility
- Scrotum ultrasound – Screens for abnormal masses and cysts in the scrotum, as well as diagnosing trauma, swelling and infertility
- Sonohysterography – Evaluates unexplained vaginal bleeding that may result from polyps, fibroids, lesions, masses or congenital defects
- Thyroid – Evaluates unexplained lumps in the neck, thyroid nodules and growth of nodules over time
An ultrasound is also used to:
- Guide procedures such as needle biopsies
- Take an image of the breasts and guide biopsies of potentially cancerous breast tissue
- Diagnose a variety of heart conditions, including valvular heart disease
- Assess damage after a heart attack
