Clinical Pastoral Education
How can we help you?

Clinical Pastoral Education

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) has been taught at Bronson Methodist Hospital since 1971. The CPE program is an integral part of the Department of Pastoral Care and Education. CPE residents and interns work in clinical environments of a teaching hospital that is familiar with and accepting of students.

Our program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and recognized by the Department of Education. It is currently the only program in Southwest Michigan to offer Level I, Level II and Educator CPE.

Bronson's CPE Program Curriculum

  • Systems theory and its application in ministry
  • Sexuality and gender issues in ministry
  • Enneagram and Myers-Briggs Personality Theories
  • The Lost Art of Listening by Michael P. Nichols, PhD
  • Narrative theology
  • Life Journey Integration Presentation
  • Seminars devoted to images of ministry in contemporary film and fiction

During Case conferences, students review their written verbatim accounts of pastoral conversations. Other seminars include Didactic Seminar, Theological Reflection Seminar, Interpersonal Relations Group and Individual Supervision.

Academic courses are credited with a pass/fail grade. The written work required each week includes verbatim accounts of encountered pastoral care, journaling and different assignments related to the current curriculum for each unit. While many traditional structures of CPE are utilized, creative students who wish to build their own educational experience are valued at Bronson. A collegial community with students is fostered, where play is taken seriously and serious work can be playful. Meet our Faculty

Bronson’s CPE program values diversity. The more we are diverse the more we have to learn from one another. We seek students who can be "living human documents" to one another. To that end, we seek students with diversity in race, ethnicity, religious/spiritual tradition, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, or disability. Read Student Testimonials
