Description:
This rotation serves to introduce the resident to core elements of practice and residency leadership, providing him/her the opportunity to experience and learn from the many unique challenges facing hospital pharmacy management teams in today's complex health care environment. The resident will work with the various members of the Pharmacy Leadership Team, whose scopes and roles vary from department-specific leadership and personnel management (Inpatient Pharmacy Operations Manager, Residency Program Director, Inpatient Pharmacy Education Coordinator), to system pharmacy leadership (System Pharmacy Director, System Clinical Coordinator) to executive-level leadership (System Med Safety Officer, Vice President), and will be exposed to, at a minimum:
- Accreditation and Medication Management Standards set up by the Joint Commission
- HIPPAA and other patient rights, as defined by state and federal law
- Staff management and engagement
- Formulary process
- Developing and conducting department meetings
- Introduction to Informatics, from a managerial angle
- Basic leadership principles
- The ASHP Accreditation Standard for PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Programs
The hours of this rotation will vary, depending on meeting schedules.
Evaluation Strategy
The resident will receive on-going, regular formative verbal feedback throughout the rotation. At the completion of the rotation the resident and preceptor will independently complete the Summative Evaluation, then will meet and compare the evaluations prior to cosigning. The resident will also complete the Learning Experience Evaluation and a Preceptor Evaluation for each preceptor.
Expectation of Residents:
- Have a working understanding of the ASHP Accreditation Standard for PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Programs and the Bronson Methodist Hospital Pharmacy Practice Residency Manual
- Develop an appreciation of management and leadership
- Conduct a Clinical Meeting
- Take minutes for a Clinical Meeting
- Participate in hospital-wide meetings with preceptors
- Participate in topic discussions with preceptors
- Complete management-focused mini projects, as assigned
- Attend a Medication Error meeting (research and evaluate a set of pharmacy-related errors and present the findings at this meeting)
