Mayer received his bachelor's degree from Amherst College, his medical degree from State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, and his Master of Public Health degree from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is board certified in Preventive Medicine.
In addition to his professional responsibilities at Bronson, Mayer serves as a member of C-Change, the national coalition to conquer cancer called together by former President George H.W. Bush. He is on the national Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. He also advises the director of the Michigan Medicaid program as a member of the Medical Care Advisory Council, and he serves as medical editor of the Hope Health Letter, an award-winning national newsletter for employees and their families. Mayer also works to assure access to quality primary care for the underserved at the Family Health Center of Battle Creek.
